Priority List: 10/3 – 10/7

Can you believe we’re already almost half way through first semester? Click on the title of this post to see your priority list for the week. The English 9 priority list is first, and the English 10 priority list is second. Remember: if you are absent, I expect you to refer to this priority list for your make-up work! Be sure to get your work turned in within two days of your return to class. If you missed a quiz, email me at kelly.hayes@aps.edu to make an appointment to make up your quiz during lunch or after school.

Essential Question: What makes strong fictional characters?

Monday, 10/3: Vocabulary Day! 

  1. Take your vocabulary quiz using Schoology. Make sure you use the same account you made last week! If you need help logging in, see me. I can tell you your username and password. You may not talk to another student as you take your quiz or as they take their quiz. You may not use your notes.
  2. Once you’ve finished taking your vocabulary quiz, please go to All Things Vocabulary Week Four to find your new words for the week. Watch the video and make your vocabulary foldable for next week.

Tuesday and Wednesday, 10/4-10/5: Characterization and “Rules of the Game”

  1. Conflict Maps Due!
  2. Notes on characterization
    • Round vs. Flat Characters
    • Direct vs. Indirect Characterization
  3. We will now read “Rules of the Game” by Amy Tan on page 316 of the green literature books.
    • Dialectical Journal Essential Question: How do authors make characters feel like real people?
      • You must have three quotes and three commentaries

Tuesday and Wednesday, 10/4-10/5: The Pearl Chapter 4 Continued

  1. Abstract Concept Frayer Model Charts are due at the beginning of the period!
    • Small group discussion: in groups of three to four, have a small discussion in which you attempt to answer each other’s level three questions. You should spend between five to seven minutes per question.
  2. Thematic Statement Notes: Use the Cornell method to take notes on how to write thematic statements.
  3. Finish reading chapter 4 of The Pearl
    • Dialectical journal essential question: What themes are beginning to develop in The Pearl?
      • You must have three quotes and three commentaries that will help you answer the essential question.
