Presentation Overview

The goal of this project is to apply the social justice found in Fahrenheit 451 to other situations in different areas of “the real world”. The purpose of this assignment is to analyze in literature and apply it in different areas as well as to do so in a different way other than through writing. You’ll create a video promoting one of the ten social justice issues. You will also answer the essential question for this unit, “How can literature promote social justice?”

Project Objectives

  • Students will be able to discuss the ideas of censorship and freedom of speech to understand the overarching theme represented in the novel.
  • Students will enrich their vocabulary and improve their knowledge and understanding of the main events and characters in Fahrenheit 451 as they relate to the author’s thematic development.
  • Students will describe and display the imagery found from this novel and how it correlates to the essential question of this unit.

Assignment Requirements

  • You will create a video choosing from one of three video options given: campaign add, a commercial or a documentary film. The overall assignment is to create a video promoting one of 10 Social Justice issues.
  • The second part of this assessment involves you answering the essential question after your video either to the class once your video is finished or within your video at the end.

10 Social Justice Topics

You will choose one of these topics as the focus for your video:

  1. Right to a Healthy Environment
  2. Right to Bear Arms
  3. Right to a Quality Education
  4. Women’s Rights
  5. Prisoner’s Rights
  6. Native American’s Rights
  7. Immigrant’s Rights
  8. Black Lives Matter Movement
  9. Right to Quality Health Care
  10. Worker’s Rights

Common Core Standards

RL.9-10.1: Cite strong and thorough textual evidence to support analysis of what the text says explicitly as well as inferences drawn from the text.

Option #1 Two Commercials

  • Length of Time Requirements15 pts. Your commercials should be 30 seconds-1 minute in length.
  • Content In Your Videos 25pts. This will be your chosen social justice topic referring to or promoting products or companies used within your commercials.
  • Theme Requirements-15 pts. It should be clear how the theme you’ve chosen could help promote your social justice topic.
  • Essential Question- 15 pts. Make sure you refer to both Of Mice and Men and Fahrenheit 451when answering the essential question, “How can literature promote social justice?” This should be answered after your commercial. This can either be on your video or explained to the class after your video is finished.
  • Presentation Requirements- 35 pts.
  • First, give some brief background information about your social justice topic so your audience understands what your video is about.
  • Show your video to the class. Your video must be uploaded to your Google Drive twenty-four hours before your presentation in order for it to be ready to view.
  • You’ll answer the essential question for this unit, being sure to include evidence from both Fahrenheit 451 and Of Mice and Men.

Option #2 Campaign Ad

  • Length of Time Requirements15 pts. This ad should be 1-2 minutes long.
  • Content In Your Video 15pts. Make sure you state this is an ad designed and paid for by the social justice topic you’ve chosen.
  • Theme Requirements-15 pts. This ad should have at least one theme used from Fahrenheit 451 as the focus for the campaign whether it’s a positive or negative ad.
  • Essential Question- 15 pts. You can either answer the essential question in your campaign PSA ad or you can answer it to the class once your video is finished. Again, make sure you compare and contrast Of Mice and Men & Fahrenheit 451.
  • Presentation Requirements- 35 pts.

  • Content In Your Video 15pts There should be at least one interview within the documentary addressing or promoting your chosen topic.
  • Theme Requirements-15 pts. Find a theme in Fahrenheit 451 and use it as the main focus for your video. Why might this theme be important? What possible cause can your theme affect in the world? Why would this theme from the novel be important for you to focus on?
  • Essential Question- 15 pts. You can either answer the essential question in your campaign PSA ad or you can answer it to the class once your video is finished. Again, make sure you compare and contrast Of Mice and Men & Fahrenheit 451.
